Welcome!

My name is Dean Young, and my professional history began in the security industry, which grew into a later career as a Peace Officer and protective services/ justice studies instructor. My academic and practitioner interests lie in restorative justice, community safety, and improving mental health in Canada’s first responder communities. My professional focus has been on capacity building for public safety endeavours with grassroots communities and Indigenous communities in Alberta, Canada.
I am an experienced public safety practitioner and educator with a demonstrated history of working in the protective services industry, with a strong academic background in social disorder, public safety and leadership. Academically, I have published scholarly works on restorative justice and neocolonialism, non-police law enforcement leadership, and right-wing extremism in peer reviewed journals in Canada and Australia.
I earned a Master of Public Safety from Wilfrid Laurier University, complementing my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (Criminology) from the University of Calgary, in addition to my Certificate in Police Leadership from Dalhousie University. Further, I am certified in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (level 1), trained in Violence and Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA) through the North American Center for Threat Assessment and Trauma Response.
I was also awarded the Alberta Emergency Service Medal in 2018 for service to Albertans as a Peace Officer and Firefighter.
I am an ardent supporter of grassroots approaches to community safety, targeting public safety professional skills development, emergency management preparedness, and first responder mental health. I am always interested in having discussions on these topics, and am eager to assist both the private and public sectors to best prepare for public safety disruptions.
